Fix for a boot image was not found for HyperV Virtual Machine

Posted on 19/01/202017/10/2024 Christian By Christian No Comments on Fix for a boot image was not found for HyperV Virtual Machine
WDS Error

In this article, we shall discuss ‘Fix for a boot image was not found for HyperV Virtual Machine”. If the issue persists after checking these factors discussed. Try booting another VM to see if it’s an isolated case or a broader PXE setup issue. This can help determine whether the problem lies with the VM configuration or the PXE serverPlease see how to Install Windows Deployment Services on Windows Server 2022, and How to Create a Windows Server VM on HyperV. Here is how to Enable HyperV on Windows: How to install Windows 11 on HyperV.

A boot image is a type of disk image (a computer file containing the complete contents and structure of a storage medium). Here is a similar error but was fixed by adding a CD/DVD media via the SCSI controller.

When it is transferred onto a boot device it allows the associated hardware to boot.

The error “boot image was not found for Hyper-V”

Note: When prompted with this error as shown below, it could mean different things. Other issues could be Missing Boot Image, improper VM configuration, and Missing Boot Image, or firewall and Security Settings etc.

This error shows an issue with Windows Deployment Services (WDS). Especially when trying to boot a Hyper-V virtual machine using a WDS boot image.

Please see How to run Windows 11 on HyperV, and how to install free Hyper-V Server on a VMware Workstation. Here is how to Install Windows Deployment Services on Windows Server 2022.

Solution

Since none of the issues above was the reason for this error. I ensured that the WDS service is running. You can check this by opening a command prompt and running:

net start wds

In my case, the WDS services were not running. A simple restart of the service solved the issue via the services manager or the command above.

This was essentially my fix for a boot image was not found for HyperV Virtual Machine error.
