Remove Bing Chat Button from Edge Sidebar

After updating to the latest version of Microsoft Edge, you may have observed a new addition in the form of a Bing Chat AI button located in the top right corner of your browser. Removing the Bing button involves going into the Registry rather than finding a direct option in the settings. Let’s see how to get rid of the Bing Chat AI button and take control of your Edge browsing again. Please see How to Disable Copilot in Windows and Microsoft Edge, and Bing AI-Powered Copilot: How to install Microsoft Edge on macOS.

Exploring the Dynamics of the Bing Chat Button in Microsoft Edge

The Bing chat button is located above the sidebar on the right side with other controls. It stays there even if the Edge sidebar is turned off. One thing that might bother you is that it launches automatically when you hover over it, similar to the Widgets board in Windows 11.

But don’t worry, there’s a solution for managing it, just like with Widgets. Here are some interesting guides: Disable Bing Search in Windows: Quick Guide for Windows, and how to Set Up and Use ChatGPT in Linux Terminal.

Removing the Bing Chat AI Button from Edge via the Registry

There isn’t a direct way to turn off the Bing Chat AI button from Microsoft settings. However, you can say goodbye to it by making a small change in the Windows Registry.

Be careful, though – editing the Registry can be tricky, and a mistake might cause problems with your system. Before you start, make sure you have good backups, like a system image and a Restore Point. Please see Restore Point Creation in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Here’s how to get rid of the Bing Chat button:

Press the Windows key to open the Start menu, type regedit, and select “Run as administrator.”

Open registry editor as administrator

Navigate to the following path:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge

On the right side, right-click, choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it HubsSidebarEnabled.

Create a new value key

Double-click HubsSidebarEnabled and set its Value data to 0.

Named value key HubsSidebarEnabled

Click OK and close the Registry Editor.

Disable the sidebar feature

Open Microsoft Edge, type edge://policy in the address bar, press Enter, and click Reload Policies.

Reload Edge policies

That’s it! The Bing Chat button will no longer be visible in Edge.

Edge Sidebar and Future Updates Considerations:

If you follow the steps in the Registry to remove the Bing Chat button, keep in mind that the entire Edge sidebar, along with its tools, will also disappear. You won’t be able to customize the sidebar through Edge’s settings.

If you want to bring it back, go back to the Registry Editor and change the HubsSidebarEnabled value to 1.

Enable Edge sidebar

It’s important to note that while this method works now, Microsoft might release updates that change it. If there are any modifications, this guide will be updated accordingly.

Conclusion:

Whether you want to get rid of the Bing Chat AI button or make other adjustments, knowing how to use Microsoft Edge gives you control. If privacy is a concern, it’s also relevant to learn how to clear your Bing Chat AI search history.
