What is the difference between iDRAC, IPMI, and ILO

Posted on 04/01/202009/10/2024 Christian By Christian No Comments on What is the difference between iDRAC, IPMI, and ILO
iDRAC

iDRAC (Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller), IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface), and iLO (Integrated Lights-Out) are all out-of-band management technologies commonly used in enterprise IT environments to remotely monitor and manage servers. Each of these technologies is associated with specific hardware vendors. In this article, we will discuss the difference between iDRAC, IPMI, and ILO. Please see Use Active Directory Explorer from Sysinternals, and how to Upgrade Windows Server 2019 to 2022 via iDRAC.

These proprietary management solutions provide greater integration with the hardware and often have better features such as (monitoring, logging, and access) than a generic IPMI implementation.

These are all forms of out-of-band management. IPMI is a (vendor-neutral standard).

  • iDRAC is a proprietary offering from Dell.
  • ILO is the HP ProLiant variant.
  • ILOM for Sun/Oracle.

Sometimes, you may hear the terms used interchangeably (Server Management Technologies Comparison). The proprietary lights-out management solutions provide more integration with the hardware and often time have nicer features (monitoring, logging, access) than a generic IPMI implementation.

Intelligent Platform Management Interface

IPMI is a standardised interface defined by the Intelligent Platform Management Interface Forum (IPMI Forum). IPMI is not tied to a specific vendor but is a standardized protocol that various server manufacturers implement in their hardware.

It provides a common set of commands and functions for system hardware management and monitoring.

IPMI allows administrators to manage servers independent of the server's operating system and is widely supported across different server brands.

iDRAC (Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller)

iDRAC is Dell’s out-of-band management solution for servers. It provides remote access and management capabilities, allowing administrators to monitor and control Dell PowerEdge servers even when the server is offline. iDRAC enables features such as remote console access, virtual media support, and hardware monitoring.

Integrated Lights-Out

iLO is HPE’s implementation of an out-of-band management solution for its servers. Similar to iDRAC, iLO provides remote access and management capabilities for HPE ProLiant servers. It includes features such as remote console access, virtual media support, and hardware monitoring.

Integrated Lights Out Manager

ILOM is a management processor embedded on the system boards of some servers and workstations by Oracle.

ILOM provides a web-based interface and a command-line interface for managing, monitoring, and troubleshooting hardware issues remotely, even when the operating system is not responding

These technologies are crucial for IT administrators as they offer the ability to manage servers remotely, perform diagnostics, troubleshoot issues, and perform various tasks without physically being present at the server location. The specific features and capabilities may vary between vendors and different generations of their server hardware.

I hope you found this blog post on Server Management Technologies Comparison helpful. Please let me know in the comment session if you have any questions.
