How to Configure Data Deduplication on Windows Server 2022

Data deduplication is a method or technique that can remove redundant copies of data and reduce data replication on the storage. Install Data Deduplication on Windows Server
1. Install Data Deduplication by opening the Server Manager and clicking Add roles and Features.

2. On the Add Roles and Features Wizard click Next to begin.

3. Select Role-based or feature-based installation as the installation type.

4. Select a physical server or virtual hard disk.

5. Click server roles, expand File and Storage Services. Select Data Deduplication and click Next.

6. Click Next on the Features page and click Install to confirm and wait for the installation to complete.

7. Configuring Data Deduplication. On the Server Manager dashboard click File and Storage Services.

8. Click on Volumes. Right click on the volume and select Configure Data Deduplication.

9. On the Data deduplication drop-down select General purpose file server.

10. Set the Deduplicate files older than (in days) and Click Set Deduplication Schedule.

11. Check the Enable background optimization and Enable throughput optimization. Configure Days of the week, Start time, and Duration (in hours) and click OK.

12. Check the Volumes and you will see the Data Deduplication Configured on the selected volume. The Deduplication Rates and Savings status will show.

13. You can also confirm this Deduplication setup from the Windows Task Scheduler. It will display the duplication schedule you setup and you can use this to manage and monitors the process.

14. If you want to Run or further check the status you can open PowerShell and enter these commands:
Start-DedupJob -Volume "Drive" \ -Type Optimization – This command will start the deduplication process on the specified drive.

Get-DedupJob – After starting the deduplication process this command will help display the progress of the deduplication process.

Get-DedupStatus – This command will display the current status of the deduplication process that was done. You will see amount of space saved and files that was optimized.
