Documents may be dispersed across Dropbox, images may be in Google Drive or OneDrive. Your crucial work data may be stored on your Synology NAS. Keeping all of this data in sync can be a hassle.

This is where Synology Cloud Sync comes in as a handy package for your Synology NAS, Cloud Sync bridges the gap between your NAS and various public cloud storage providers.

Learn the step-by-step guide on how to set up the Synology DS923+ NAS. As with other storage solution, Synology is not exempted from being attack, see how to employ Synology best practice to remediate StealthWorker Botnet attack.

What is Synology Cloud Sync?

Let’s delve into how Cloud Sync works and how it can streamline your file management across different cloud platforms.

Synology Cloud Sync is a feature available with Synology NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices. It allows you to synchronize data between your Synology NAS and a variety of cloud storage providers, such as Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive.

It is a package you can install on your Synology NAS that lets you synchronize files between your NAS and multiple public cloud storage services. Think of it as a bridge between your NAS, which is like your own personal cloud storage, and popular public cloud services. The below are the features of Synology Cloud Sync:

  • Syncs with multiple cloud services: It supports a wide variety of cloud providers including Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Baidu Cloud, and even Amazon S3 compatible storage.
  • One-way or two-way sync: You can choose whether to have a one-way or two-way sync. One-way sync means changes are only reflected in one location, while two-way keeps both locations up-to-date.
  • Selective sync: You don’t have to sync everything on your NAS. You can choose specific folders to keep in sync with the cloud storage.
  • Encryption and compression: Synology Cloud Sync offers client-side encryption to keep your data secure during transfer and storage. It can also compress files to reduce storage space used in the cloud.
  • Traffic control: You can set bandwidth limits to manage how much internet data Cloud Sync uses.

Configure Synology Cloud Sync

As mentioned above, you can setup a one-way or two-way sync with Synology Cloud Sync depending on your requirements. Here we will only configure as a one-way sync.

Step 1: Log into your Synology NAS

Here it is assumed that your Synology NAS has been fully set-up. The login for NAS storage is usually access through an IP Address and a unique assignable port number.

Once you login to it, the first interface will be similar to the screenshot below:

This is a one-way sync because Cloud Sync will only download data from the source folder (OneDrive) to the Synology NAS.
