How to configure Synology Active Insights

Posted on 30/04/202416/10/2025 Christian By Christian No Comments on How to configure Synology Active Insights

Synology Active Insight service is a dedicated web portal that seamlessly monitors the health, performance, and security of multiple hosts under your Synology Account. In this article, we shall discuss How to configure Synology Active Insights. Active Insights provides proactive monitoring with real-time alerts and self-help steps to troubleshoot any anomalies that arise. Please see Fix AirDrop issue “No People found and there is no one nearby to share with” on Mac.

Note: With Synology Active insights. You will stay ahead of potential issues with comprehensive insights into your system’s status, ensuring optimal performance around the clock.

Whether it’s a sudden drop in performance or a security concern, Active Insight keeps you informed and empowered to take swift action.

Note: The Active Insight service requires a Synology Account as we shall see below.

Also, see DSM Security: How to Protect Synology DS923+ NAS, how to set up System Insights on Windows Admin Center, and how to Sync Data in Cloud Drives to Synology NAS.

Enable Active Insights

Before using Active Insight, sign in to your Synology Account on your Synology NAS through DSM’s Control Panel and click on Synology Account.

As you can see, I have already set up my account.

Install Active Insight Package on Synology NAS

On your Synology NAS device, install Active Insight. You will find this in the Package Center within the DSM (DiskStation Manager) interface. Search for “Active Insight” and follow the installation instructions.

Unfortunately, I have installed this package before deciding to create this blogpost

Authorize Active Insight

After installing the Active Insight Agent, you’ll need to authorize it to communicate with your Synology Account. Follow the prompts to link the Active Insights with your account. Click on the “Click Get Started” button as shown below.

On the Select your Subscription wizard, you will be prompted to check your license status in the Active Insight portal. Click Apply to continue.

Note: If you have enough valid licenses, one will be auto-assigned to this Synology NAS, enabling the service instantly. I am fine with the free (3) complementary licenses.

As you can see, the Subscription has been activated. As you can see, I still have two (2) unused licenses.

Subscription activated for active insights

Please, see Download and update Synology DiskStation NAS to DSM 7.3. Here is how to patch Veeam Backup and replication 12.3.2.3617 to 12.3.2.4165.

Access Active Insights Web Interface

Upon login, the Overview page provides you with the hosts’ operating status and abnormal events if present. The Total Hosts card shows the number of hosts that have Critical/Warning events or that are Healthy.

The Recent Events card shows the most recent 50 events. Click on an event to get its details.

Manage Subscription for Active Insights

You can navigate to the Active Insight web portal > Subscription to adjust your license assignment or purchase more licenses.

To modify your subscription, such as reducing the number of subscribed licenses or unregistering them. If you no longer require the Active Insight service on certain hosts, revoke their licenses. Ensure that the total number of valid licenses corresponds to (or exceeds) the number of hosts you wish to monitor.

On the Management page, you can manage the settings of the Active Insight web portal in the following tabs respectively.

You can view login sessions, review account delegation and view logs. For example, this login tab lists the logins to the Active Insight web portal with your Synology Account. If you find any suspicious logins, you can click Remove to stop the login sessions.

The host group tab lets you organize your hosts into groups. Apart from the email address of your Synology Account, you can specify more email addresses as notification recipients for each group.

Therefore, when an event occurs, notifications will also be sent to your specified recipients.

The Account Delegation Active Insight tab enables a solution provider to manage the hosts on behalf of other Synology Accounts.

Therefore, this Account delegation tab lists the Synology Accounts that are delegated to you with the number of their monitored hosts.

Active Insights Notification/Alerts

Synology Active Insights enables you to receive instant notifications directly to your preferred device or email. Thereby keeping you informed even when you’re on the go.

With actionable steps provided alongside alerts, you can quickly address any issues and minimize downtime. Below is an example of an email notification that you can receive via Active Insights.

Alternatively, you could log into the Active Insights portal and view “Events” directly from the dashboard.

I hope you found this article on how to configure Synology Active Insights useful. Please feel free to leave a comment below.
