Veeam has recently released an update to the Veeam Data Platform on the 27th of Auguest, 2024. This release introduces new features and integrations. This release significantly expands the capabilities of the Veeam Backup and Replication platform. In this article, we will discuss How to upgrade Veeam Backup and Replication to version 12.2. Please see how to Set up Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure, and how to “Install and configure Veeam Backup and Replication Community Edition.

Below are some of the added compatibility “Support for Proxmox VE, support for MongoDB, integration with Nutanix Prism Central, and support for Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB”. You can read more here.

Note: Before proceeding with these steps, I will recommend taking a look at the upgrade checklist to ensure an error-free upgrade. kindly keep in mind that a reboot is also required for the upgrade.

Download the Latest ISO

To download the Veeam Backup & Replication 12.2 ISO image, kindly navigate to the following URL to download the ISO manage.

Upon clicking on Download, you will be redirected to enter your login credentials.

Shortly, the download will begin.

Upon download, navigate to the download folder and mount the image.

Upgrade Veeam Backup and Replication to the latest version

Upon mounting the image, double click on the setup as shown below.

Run Setup

On the upgrade screen, click on upgrade.

Select the first option “Upgrade Veeam Backup and Replication”

The setup wizard is being initiated.

Accept the license terms

Accept license
Veeam Backup & Replication 12.2 uses the same license file format introduced with version 10, so you can use your existing version 10 or 11 license file to install version 12.2. 

Below are the backup components to be upgraded and version.

Do not forget to select “Update remote components automatically” and click Next to proceed.

Upgrade components
You must upgrade Veeam components on all remote servers with which the backup server communicates during data protection and disaster recovery tasks. If you do not upgrade components on remote servers, Veeam Backup & Replication jobs will fail

I have my license file locally. Therefore, I will browse to it.

Shortly, the system will perform some System Configuration Check.

Note: This will ensure there is enough disk space and that the backup server to be upgraded is installed on the supported operating system etc.

As mentioned earlier, a reboot is required. Please proceed and have your VBR restarted.

I will be choosing the second option and will therefore specify the password the Administrators account.

Note: You cannot use a gMSA for running the Veeam Backup Service

Veeam Backup & Replication automatically grants the Log on as service right to the specified user account

Veeam Database

I will be using my existing DB instance for sure. I will leave this section as it is and click next.

Database engine

As you can see below, the database will be automatically upgraded to the latest version.

Click on “Yes” to proceed.

Upgrade DB

At the configuration check wizard, the setup will checks the Veeam Backup & Replication configuration. If there are errors, the check will return them. You should therefore try to resolve these errors before proceeding.

In my case, there were no errors. Review the upgrade settings and start the upgrade process by clicking on upgrade.

As you can see below, the upgrade is currently in progress and at this step, the VBR server is being upgraded.

Now that the upgrade is complete, click Finish to exit the wizard.

To verify the upgrade and version number. Click on Help from the Hamburger Menu and select “Help” and then “About”.

Note: Note that immediately after the upgrade, the backup server performance may decrease. This happens due to the maintenance job that optimizes the configuration database. The process may take up to an hour depending on the database size
