Running backups is critical for any organization, and encountering connection errors in Veeam Backup & Replication can bring your operations to a halt. One of the most common issues administrators faced and reported in the Veeam community is the error below.

Why was the error prompted “Connection Failed: Make sure it is online”?
As mentioned above, the error “Failed to connect to the backup server: Make sure it is online” appears when VRO tries to deploy or connect agents to VBR. This is because, the VBR services aren’t responding on ports 9392 and 443.
This prompted me to take a look at the Veeam Backup and replication Server itself and attempted connecting to it. But failed with the error “failed to connect to the backup server: Make sure it is online”. As you can see below, some of the services are not running and this is the sole reason I could also not add VBR to VBEM.

Fix Connectivity to the Backup Server
To fix this issue, log into the VBR server and open Services Manager (services.msc). Locate all Veeam services such as the ” Veeam Backup Service, Veeam Backup Console Service, Veeam SQL-related services” and have them started.
As you can see now, all services are up and running again and you should be able to access the Veeam Backup and replication Console and also be able to add the VBR to VBEM for management.

Access VBR Console
Now, proceed and fire up the VBR console again and the error should no longer be prompted as shown below.
