Virtualization is the process of creating a software-based, or virtual, representation of something, such as virtual applications, servers, storage and networks. It is the single most effective way to reduce IT expenses while boosting efficiency and agility for all size businesses. VMware bases its virtualization technologies on its bare-metal hypervisor ESX/ESXi in x86 architecture. Before we proceed into resolving this issue, let me explain some key terms. See these guides on some related contents: How to fix VirtualBox Displaying only 32 bits Option, and how to enable Hyper-V on a VMware Workstation.

With VMware server virtualization, a hypervisor is installed on the physical server to allow for multiple virtual machines (VMs) to run on the same physical server. This is typically referred to as a Type 1 virtualization. It does not need to load any form of Operating System and therefore referred to as a bare-metal hypervisor! See the following guide on how to create and add a new virtual disk to a Windows virtual machine in VMware and how to remove recent connections from the vSphere Client.

Since we are using VMware Workstation, it makes sense to discuss what a Type 2 hypervisor is. This is referred to as a host-based hypervisor as well and runs on an existing operating system. Some examples are VMware Fusion, VMware Workstation, VMware player and Oracle VM VirtualBox.

Note: The significant difference between a Type 1 and Type 2 hypervisors is that Type 1 runs on bare metal and Type 2 runs on top of an OS as described above. In our case, we are running a Tier 2 hypervisor. For an exhaustive list of contents relating to virtualization, see this link.
