Google Chrome is the most popular web browser, it is free, fast, and secure. Even as the best search engine to me, you may find yourself battling with some of its features. You may want to stream a video on YouTube or want to watch a movie on some other website and you suddenly realize that you are unable to hear any sounds from what you are watching or listening to sound not working while watching a video on Chrome. The problem can be as simple as accidentally muting speakers or having a faulty volume (audio) issue. Chrome sound is often not working because of cookies and cache, or even malware infections. This was my issue as I had to clear cookies off my browser. Kindly refer to these related guides: How to enable or disable automatic Live Caption on macOS through Chrome, how to set a browser as default in Windows, How to make Cortana search with a different web browser instead of Bing and Edge, how to make Cortana use your default web browser such as Google Chrome, and how to fix clock synchronization issues in Windows.
You may have found yourself in a situation where you are unable to hear the sounds from your video (Youtube) playing on Google Chrome. Your device volume isn't muted etc. If this is the reason you are here, you are in the right place.
The reason for this issue as you can see in the image below is that the site has been muted. You will not be able to hear sounds via your headset or device internal speakers
To fix this issue, you will have to unmute the site as shown below. Just right-click on the tab and select unmute site. This resolved the issue for me.
If these steps above do not help resolve his issues, please ensure the Allow sites to play sound (recommended) option is enabled in the Chrome sound settings:chrome://settings/content/sound
.
Alternatively, you can proceed with the steps, click on the three dots (or three horizontal lines) in the upper right-hand corner of the browser, and click on the Settings page.
Click on Settings and Privacy as shown below and then on Site Settings.
This will open the site settings. Under “Additional content settings
“, click on Sounds. As you can see, it is not muted below. If it was, you will have to expand the sound setting by clicking on it as shown below.
Ensure Sites can play sound is selected.
Other steps to try
If the general steps for fixing the “sound not working” does not help. Below are some common fixes for Chrome users. Check to make sure the headphones are correctly plugged in. On many devices, there should be an audible click when pushing them inside your device.
