In this article, we shall discuss how to convert HEIC images to JPEG format on Mac with Quick Actions. Please see how to use iCloud for Windows: How to install and uninstall iCloud for Windows, and how to change the default screen capture format in macOS. As a leading tech giant, Apple consistently strives for uniqueness, evident in its distinctive operating systems that set its products apart from others in the industry.

While many devices operate on generic operating systems, Apple’s proprietary iOS stands out for its distinct features and functionality. A notable example is the introduction of the High-Efficiency Image Format (HEIC) with the release of iOS 9 and subsequent versions.

In contrast to the conventional JPG format, Apple’s innovative approach enhances image storage, marking a significant departure from the industry standard and showcasing the company’s commitment to pioneering advancements in technology.

What is High-Efficiency Image Container (HEIC)

High-Efficiency Image Container (HEIC) is the default format for storing images on iPhones and Macs. It offers high compression, low storage space, and quality images.

There’s nothing you need to do to share HEIC photos with other iPhones and Macs, but not all phones, devices, and computers can work with this file type. Then you will have to convert HEIC photos to JPGs to share with anyone.

Why convert HEIC image format to JPEG format

As discussed above, converting HEIC (High-Efficiency Image Format) images to JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) format is often done for several practical reasons:

Compatibility: JPEG is a widely supported image format that is compatible with a vast range of devices, applications, and platforms.

While newer Apple devices capture images in HEIC to save space without compromising quality, some older devices or software may not support this format. Converting HEIC to JPEG ensures that the images can be viewed and used on a broader range of devices.

Universal Accessibility

JPEG is a standard format that is universally recognized by web browsers, image viewers, and editing software.

By converting HEIC to JPEG, you ensure that the images can be easily shared, uploaded, and viewed across various platforms without compatibility issues.

Editing Flexibility

JPEG is a more widely supported format for image editing tools. If you plan to edit or manipulate the images using software that may not fully support HEIC. C converting them to JPEG ensures greater flexibility in the editing process.

Web Compatibility

When sharing images on websites or social media platforms. JPEG is a preferred format due to its widespread support and smaller file sizes.

This is one motivating factor for me. Converting HEIC to JPEG before uploading ensures that the images can be easily shared and accessed by a broader audience online.

Note: It will interest you to know that JPEG files are smaller than PNG files. They are faster, it helps decrease bounce rates due to faster load time thereby increasing your google ranking and reducing storage.

Reduced File Size

While HEIC offers superior image quality at smaller file sizes compared to JPEG. There are scenarios where reducing file size is still desirable, such as for email attachments or web uploads. Converting HEIC to JPEG can help in achieving smaller file sizes, making it more practical for certain use cases.

Steps to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac

There are different ways you can convert a HEIC file to JPEG on a Mac. This includes using Preview or third-party tools

If you think you will always want your photos to be in JPG format, you can change the image default from HEIC to JPG. Please see how to change the default screen capture format in macOS. JPGs take a little more storage room, but they are very high-quality and can be converted to WebP.
