How to import your Chrome or Firefox passwords into your iCloud Keychain

Posted on 13/12/202314/12/2023 Christian By Christian No Comments on How to import your Chrome or Firefox passwords into your iCloud Keychain
Password Migration to ICloud Keychain

iCloud Keychain serves as Apple’s mechanism for synchronizing your data across various devices. It goes beyond just managing passwords and extends to include details such as credit card information and Wi-Fi passwords. In this article, we shall discuss the steps to import your Chrome or Firefox passwords into your iCloud Keychain from Google Chrome and Firefox. Please see How to sync your passwords across iOS and Mac devices, and How to install and uninstall iCloud for Windows.

Ensure that you activate iCloud Keychain on your iOS device if you plan to access your passwords.

Please note that the steps might change in the future due to feature enhancements. We will do well to have this article updated. But then, always ensure to follow the latest instructions provided by the respective browser and platform.

Enable Keychain

To do this, navigate to the System Preferences app. Click on the Apple icon in the upper-left corner, and then iCloud.

Ensure that the Keychain is checked as shown below.

To do this via the iOS, navigate to Settings and tap on your name. Tap on iCloud and scroll down to Keychain. If Keychain is Off, tap on the entry and then toggle it on

Import your Password

To migrate your data into Keychain, you will need to import it into Safari on your Mac. Therefore, launch Safari as shown below.

launchsafari
Note: You must quit Google Chrome before your information can be imported.

As shown below, you can import passwords from either Firefox or Chrome. In this guide, I will be showing you the two steps.

Also, see Chrome and Firefox: How to make Cortana search with a different web browser instead of Bing and Edge, and How to Grant Local Admin Permissions to a Group [Part 1].

Import Password from Google Chrome

To import passwords from Google Chrome, you would need to fire up Safari as shown below.

Open Safari, and click on ‘File’ in the menu bar. Next, select ‘Import From’ and select ‘Google Chrome’.

As you can see, all boxes are checked by default. I am only interested in passwords. Therefore, I will uncheck the other two boxes.

After selecting the other two boxes, click ‘Import’

Safari will prompt you to use your ‘Chrome Safe Storage’ keychain information. Enter your password and click ‘Allow’.

Import Password from Firefox

Let’s import passwords also for Firefox. Please repeat the same process, but this time, select import from Firefox.

I will uncheck the other two boxes. After selecting the other two boxes, click ‘Import’

As you can see below, the passwords will be imported

View Imported Password on Safari

You can check the import password by going to Safari’s top menu and selecting Preferences > Passwords.

You will be prompted to enter your user password to access the password list. Afterwards, you should see your passwords listed there.
Imported Passwords to Keychaim

Also, after importing your passwords into Safari, iCloud Keychain will automatically detect and make them accessible across all your approved devices. To verify, use Spotlight Search to type and click on “Keychain Access.”

This action will open the Keychain app, where you can select iCloud in the top-left column and “Passwords” in the bottom left to view your imported passwords.

Conclusion

You can check to see if the passwords are successfully imported by pressing Command + Space and typing “Keychain Access”. Under “Keychains” in the top left corner, select iCloud and you should be able to see all the passwords and login information you just imported.

You can use iCloud Keychain on your iPhone or iPad to log into websites or apps since they are now synced to iCloud. Alternatively, if you have a Windows computer, you can access your passwords using the Chrome extension as well.

FAQs on Keychain

How Do I Enable or Disable Apple Keychain?

To enable iCloud Keychain on an Apple device:
– On iOS: Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Keychain and toggle the switch.
– On macOS: Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud and select Keychain.

To disable iCloud Keychain, follow the same steps and toggle the switch to the off position. Keep in mind that disabling Keychain will remove Keychain data from the device, and it won’t be synced across devices.

Can I Use Apple Keychain on Non-Apple Devices?

While Apple Keychain is primarily designed for Apple’s ecosystem, it is not limited to Apple devices only. Users can access their Keychain information on Mac, iPhone, and iPad. However, for non-Apple devices (Windows, Android), accessing Keychain data is not as straightforward. This is referred to as iCloud Password on Windows.

How Secure is Apple Keychain?

Apple Keychain is designed with a focus on security. The stored information is encrypted and protected by the user’s iCloud account credentials. Additionally, Apple uses end-to-end encryption to ensure that even Apple cannot access the stored data.

The use of two-factor authentication for the iCloud account adds an extra layer of security. Users need to set a strong iCloud password and enable two-factor authentication to enhance the security of their Keychain data.
