Copy and paste between your Windows or MacOS and Hyper-V Server or VMs running do not work correctly. In order to be able to use the copy and paste feature between your device and Hyper-V, this needs to be configured in advance. Therefore, we will discuss how to perform Copy and Paste between your device to a VM running in Hyper-V. Please see How to copy and paste between host machines and VirtualBox VM, and how to Associate SSH Public key with Azure Linux VM.

The easiest option to copy between a Personal Computer (Laptop) and a Hyper-V VM is to utilize the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to copy files. This, initiate a connection to the VM via RDP and then you should be able to copy files between your Computer and the VM.

You may also want to see “An error occurred while attempting to connect to the server: Check if the Virtual Machine Management service is running or you are not authorized to connect to this server, and learn the various ways to Various ways to copy files from host to VMware Workstation VM“.

If this is not an option for you and you want to be able to perform copy and paste between your physical hosts and VMs seamlessly, then follow the steps discussed below.

Method 1: Enable Enhanced Session Mode on Hyper-V

You have to check if the Enhanced Session Mode is enabled. If this is not enabled, please follow the steps below to ensure the Enhanced Session Mode is enabled.

Open the Hyper-V Manager console and right-click on the host name and select Hyper-V Settings. You could also select Hyper-V settings from the Action pane as you wish.

When this is done, you can copy basically anything from the physical device such as your laptop to the VM running on Hyper-V.

In the example below, I am copying an ISO image since I wish to install the VeeamONE monitor on this VM.

Method 2: Copying Images to VMS using the iSCSI Controller

In Hyper-V Manager, select the virtual machine where you want to add the storage. Right-click and choose “Settings”.

Under the iSCSI Controller, click on the DVD Drive and browse to the image you wish to attach and browse to the image. This image could be on a USB provided it is attached to the Server where the Hyper-V is running. This is why, many of you will not find this option optimal.

You will be able to select the image as shown below.
