Full Integration Guide on how to Add Nutanix AHV to Veeam

In this guide, we shall discuss the “Full Integration Guide on how to Add Nutanix AHV to Veeam”. If you’re running a Nutanix AHV environment and want to back up your virtual machines (VMs) using Veeam Backup & Replication. Want to deep-dive into performance? Please, see how to Set up Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure, how to Upgrade Veeam Backup and Replication to version 12.2, and How to upgrade Veeam Backup and Replication 12.3.
Nutanix is a hybrid multicloud platform that simplifies IT infrastructure by integrating compute, storage, networking, and virtualization into a single software-defined solution. Below are the step-by-step guide shows how to:
- Add your Nutanix AHV cluster to the Veeam console
- Configure AHV backup proxies (Workers)
- Create reliable backup jobs
- Restore virtual machines and files with confidence
Whether you’re working in a test lab or a full production environment, this guide will help you protect your workloads efficiently.
Check out my article on Veeam Disk I/O using DiskSpd. Also, see Understanding the different types of Proxy Servers, and how to “Fix Error 1069: Windows could not start the Veeam backup service on local computer“.
Step 1: Add Nutanix AHV to Veeam Infrastructure
Open the Veeam Backup & Replication Console. Navigate to Backup Infrastructure > Add Server > Nutanix AHV
Enter the required details: “IP address or FQDN of Prism Central or Prism Element, and Credentials with administrative access”.
Enter the Storage container and Network settings for the FLR helper appliance as shown below.

Veeam automatically detects the Nutanix cluster. You’ll be prompted to deploy or link the Veeam AHV Backup Proxy Appliance
Note: The Veeam AHV Backup Proxy is a virtual appliance responsible for managing snapshot and data transfer operations from AHV to the Veeam backup repository.

Step 2: Configure AHV Backup Proxies
After adding the AHV cluster, access the Veeam AHV Web Console to configure your Worker Nodes.

What Are Workers?
Workers are internal proxy components that offload and manage the actual data movement from AHV to the Veeam repository. Each worker handles a portion of backup or restore jobs. Distributing them improves performance and parallelism.
Bonus Tip: Want to integrate an IBM Tape Library with Veeam for even stronger backup strategies? Read my full guide: Using IBM Library with Veeam.
How to Configure:
Go to the Configuration tab
Define Worker node settings:
- IP range and subnet
- Network interfaces (ensure access to Nutanix and Veeam repo)
- Max number of concurrent tasks
- Host affinity
Choose the host

Specify the network parameters etc
Distribute Workers across Nutanix AHV hosts for high availability and load balancing

Step 3: Create Backup Jobs for Nutanix AHV VMs
To create your first backup job. Launch the Veeam AHV Web Console and navigate to the Backup Jobs and create Job
Next, is the VM selection (manually or using tags/groups from Prism), and schedule and retention policy. Lastly, define the Backup repository (in Veeam B&R)
Configure:
- Job name
- Snapshot only for fast recovery, lower storage impact
- Backup only for offloading to external repositories
- Snapshot + Backup is recommended for both fast local and off-site recovery
Step 4: Restore Nutanix AHV VMs with Veeam
Depending on your recovery needs, Veeam offers flexible restore options
Please, see how to Install SQL Server Management Studio 21 on Windows Server, how to Install Windows Server 2025 via iDRAC Virtual Media or PXE, and What you need to know about Microsoft Defender Antivirus.
Full VM Restore
From the AHV Web Console: Restore > Full VM and select restore point
Restore to original or alternate location (e.g., VMware vSphere). Yes, it’s possible! You can restore Nutanix AHV VMs to VMware or Hyper-V using Veeam’s Cross-Platform Restore capabilities. This is particularly useful for migration, testing, or disaster recovery scenario.
File-Level Restore
Go to Veeam B&R Console: Restore and select Guest Files
- Supports Windows and Linux file systems
- Granular recovery without restoring entire VM
Select the restore point
Application-Item Restore
Use Veeam Explorers from the Veeam B&R Console. Restore SQL Server databases, Active Directory objects, Exchange items, etc.
Final Thoughts
Integrating Nutanix AHV with Veeam Backup & Replication provides robust protection and flexibility for modern virtual environments. By properly configuring your proxies, backup jobs, and retention policies, you ensure fast, reliable restores and peace of mind.
