How to download, install and activate, and uninstall IBM SPSS Statistics

IBM SPSS Statistics is a statistical software suite developed by IBM for data management, advanced analytics, multivariate analysis, business intelligence, and criminal investigation. Previously developed by SPSS Inc, and has since been acquired by IBM in 2009. In a nutshell, the IBM SPSS software bridges the gap between data science and data understanding and offers advanced statistical analysis, a vast library of machine learning algorithms, text analysis, open-source extensibility, integration with big data, and seamless deployment into applications. Here are some related SPSS products: IBM SPSS Modeler (exposes patterns and models hidden in data through a bottom-up, hypothesis generation approach), and IBM SPSS Modeler in Cloud Pak for Data (enables you to take advantage of SPSS Modeler on the public cloud). Want to learn more about its features and benefits etc, kindly click on this link.

If you have your software shop (portal) in your organisation or institution, you may want to download this software from it. In my case, I downloaded it from there, therefore, I will not be sharing any download link. Else, you may want to create an IBM SPSS Statistics trial account at no cost. Kindly use this link for registration. For student and faculty version, see the following link.

SPSS Statistics is available by subscription which offers you greater speed and ease of use than ever before. Because IBM SPSS Statistics Subscription does not rely on the traditional SPSS Statistics licensing model, you are provided more flexibility with your purchasing options. You can purchase the software as a monthly subscription without any term commitments. The following steps will walk you through the IBM SPSS Statistics Subscription purchasing process. Navigate to the IBM SPSS Statistics portal. You are presented with options for downloading the trial version or purchasing the IBM SPSS Statistics Subscription Base version and the available add-ons

If you have already purchased IBM SPSS Statistics Subscription from the IBM Marketplace. To download and install IBM SPSS Statistics Subscription, go to the IBM Marketplace and follow the steps below.

  • Sign in with your IBM account (also known as IBMid). You must register for an IBMid if you do not already have an active IBM account.

SPSS silent installation on macOS

A silent, unattended installation does not display a graphical interface and does not require any user intervention. Use the following command to run a silent installation. On macOS, you must run as root or with the sudo command.

sudo installer -pkg IBM\ SPSS\ Statistics.pkg -target /

If you want to push a silent installation on macOS with an activated license, you must write a script that executes the silent installation command and calls the license activator tools after the installation completes. See the example below.

sudo installer -pkg IBM\ SPSS\ Statistics.pkg -target / cd /Applications/IBM\ SPSS\ Statistics/Resources/Activation

After installation, you can use the following command to disable Internet connectivity features (information sharing, error reporting, and welcome screen updates). The command must be run from the /Applications/IBM SPSS Statistics/Resources/Configuration directory (this is the default installation location):

./Configure NO

SPSS uninstallation on macOS

You can drag the installation folder by default,  (/Applications/IBM SPSS Statistics) to the Trash or launch Applications and right-click on the IBM SPSS Statistics, and select move to trash.

If you wish, you may empty your Trash!
