In this guide, I will show you what to do when you are unable to connect to a Hyper V VM when the following message is prompted “Video Remoting was disconnected on Hyper V”. Hyper-V is a native hypervisor developed by Microsoft; it can create virtual machines on x86-64 systems running Windows. Please, see PowerShell Remoting | Windows Management Instrumentation, how to Enable WinRM on Windows Servers and Windows PCs, and How to disconnect a Remote Desktop User.

Because various online suggestions such as disabling or enabling Enhanced Session Mode in the VM configuration. This does not actually resolve the issue. Also, restarting all Hyper-V services will not as well. All these are common causes only. This blog post was created to provide a more reliable and comprehensive solution.

The goal is to move beyond quick fixes. It aims to explain the underlying causes of the “Video Remoting was disconnected” problem on Hyper-V. Thereby, offering practical troubleshooting steps that address both system and configuration factors to restore stable console access.

Why was the error Video Remoting was disconnected prompted?

I noticed that this issue affected only a single VM. Therefore, disabling Enhanced Session Mode would not resolve it. In this case, it appeared that the VM had restarted or become unresponsive.

The guest OS may have rebooted and then hung. It was not a crash, such as the well-known BSOD, but rather an update-related reboot.

Alternaatively, you could initiate an RDP connection to the guest VM itself. You can also use the following ccommand for it: mstsc /v:<Ip address of the vm>

video remoting was disconencted
VM turn Off (hard power off) or Reset will not fix this issue!

Please, see how to Map and disconnect Virtual Disk in VMware Workstation, RDP Configuration Settings: Connect automatically to RDP session, and how to prevent Windows from Saving RDP Connection History.

Quick Fix “Apply Windows Updates on Hyper-V Host”

I took a look at the Hyper-V host itself and noticed it needed to be restarted due to pending updates installed. I applied the updates on the host (HyperV) and restarted the Hyper-V host.

Applied patch on the hiost VM and restarted it

As you can see, the update is in progress.

Please, see Fix Windows Server frequent disconnects and shutdown, Guide to Remote Desktop Connection Properties for Secure Access, and how to Copy and Paste between your device to a VM running in Hyper-V.

Connect to the Hyper-V Guest VM

Now that we have properly patched the Hyper-V host itself, let us initiate a connection to the guest VM once more.

access vm

As you can see below, we are able to connect to the guess VM on Hyper V.

connect to VM

Enter your password and that is it.

Understanding your environment is paramount when troubleshooting issues like this. In this case, the problem occurred because the Hyper-V host required a restart following system updates. Once the host was rebooted, the VM could be used as before.
