Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is an essential security measure that adds an extra layer of protection to your Microsoft 365/Office 365 account. By implementing 2FA, you enhance the security of your sensitive data by requiring an additional verification step beyond just a password. However, there may be instances where you need to change your 2FA method. This detailed guide will walk you through the process of changing your Two-Factor Authentication method in Microsoft 365/Office 365.

Instructions for Changing Two-Factor Authentication Methods

Method 1: Switching from SMS-based Authentication to an Authenticator App

Step1: How to disable SMS/Call-based authentication:

Log in to your Microsoft 365/Office 365 account using your current authentication method. Navigate to the security settings or account settings section, usually found under your profile or user settings.

Under the Security Info page, you will find all the authentication method enabled on your account. To change the phone number for SMS/call-based authentication, click the “Change” button or click the “Delete” button to disable SMS/call-based authentication.

Follow the provided instructions to modify or disable SMS/call-based authentication for your account.

Step 2: Setting up and configuring an authenticator app

Install a reputable authenticator app on your mobile device, such as Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, or Authy. Open the authenticator app and follow the provided instructions to set it up.

In your Microsoft 365/Office 365 account’s security settings, click on “Add sign-in method” to add a new authentication method.

Choose the “Authenticator app” option and follow the on-screen instructions.

Scan the QR code displayed on the screen using your authenticator app.

The app will generate a verification code. Enter this code into the designated field in your Microsoft 365/Office 365 account to complete your sign-in.

Step 3: Enabling the new authentication method and verifying its functionality:

Save the changes to your Microsoft 365/Office 365 account settings after you have set up the authenticator app and entered the verification code.

Log out of your account and then try to log back in to see how the new login method works. When asked to verify your identity, select “Use a verification code“.

Look for the option to disable or remove the app’s connection to your Microsoft 365/Office 365 account.

Follow the provided instructions to disable or remove the app.

Step 2: Setting up and configuring the new authenticator app

Install the new authenticator app on your mobile device. Open the new authenticator app and follow the provided instructions to set it up.

In your Microsoft 365/Office 365 account’s security settings, click on “Add sign-in method” to add a new authentication method and choose the “Authenticator app” option and follow the on-screen instructions.

Scan the QR code displayed on the screen using your new authenticator app.

Step 3: Verifying the new authentication method:

Save the changes to your Microsoft 365/Office 365 account settings after you have set up the authenticator app and entered the verification code.
