Credential Sync acrosss devices

In this article, we shall discuss the steps to sync your passwords across iOS and Mac devices. To do this, you would use the Apple iCloud Keychain to keep your passwords, credit card information, Wi-Fi network information etc. up to date across all your approved devices. Please see how to Scan Apple Calendar: Prevent Norton from scanning your Apple Calendar on iOS, how to fix unable to access microphone on Zoom, and how to sync on-premises AD with Azure AD via Azure AD Connect.

Why sync your credentials across devices?

Syncing your passwords across iOS and Mac devices ensures a seamless and secure experience. It allows you to access your passwords, logins, and sensitive data on any of your Apple devices. Thereby enhancing convenience and safeguarding your digital identity.

Also, iCloud Keychain synchronization across devices provides redundancy in case you lose one of your devices.

Note: If all your devices are lost and you have added a recovery contact to your Apple ID account. Your contact can help you recover your iCloud Keychain.

You may want to see how to fix “AD Connect Sync Service not running: Cannot proceed because the sync service is not running, start the ADSync service and restart the AD Connect Wizard to continue“, and how to “Download Apps without passwords on Apple App Store“

Sync your passwords across iOS and Mac

On your Mac, choose the Apple menu () at the top of your screen, then choose System Preferences or System Settings.

Note: You can also access the System Preferences from the LaunchPad or via the spotlight search.

Setup iCloud Keychain

We assume that you already have Keychain setup on your iOS. If this is not the case, navigate to Settings  > [your name] > iCloud > Passwords and Keychain, turn on iCloud Keychain and follow the onscreen instructions.

Note: iCloud Keychain can also keep the accounts you use in Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and Messages up to date across all your iPhone and iPad devices and Mac computers

After enabling iCloud Keychain in your device settings, your passwords will be automatically synchronized across your iOS and Mac devices.

To access your password, launch System Preferences and click on Passwords

You will be prompted to enter your password to unlock. Simply enter your password in the password field shown in the image below.

Is syncing your passwords safe, and what security measures are in place?

Syncing passwords with Apple’s iCloud Keychain is secure. Apple employs robust encryption to protect your data, and two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security. Furthermore, your passwords are stored locally on your devices, minimizing the risk of unauthorized access.
