Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) centralises the management and distribution of Windows updates. Instead of relying on GPO or individual computers to fetch updates from the internet, administrators can control and distribute updates within the network using WSUS. In this article, we shall discuss how to install WSUS on Windows Server 2022. Note: The process of setting up Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) is similar to setting up WSUS on Windows Server 2019, 2016, and 2012R2.

Add WSUS Role on Windows Server

Launch the Server Manager by clicking on the Server Manager if not automatically started. From the dashboard, click on Add Roles and Features. You can also do this from the “Manage” menu as shown below.

On the “Before you Begin” wizard, click Next.

Select “Role-Based or feature-based installation” and click Next

If you have multiple servers in the server pool, ensure you select the right server to install WSUS onto.

Check the box next to “Windows Server Update Services”

You will be prompted to add the following features. Click on “Add features” as shown below.

On the “Features” wizard, click next to proceed.

Please acquaint yourself some more information about WSUS and click Next.

I would like to use the Internal Windows database. If you would like to use SQL, uncheck the WID and ensure you select “SQL Server Connectivity”. On Windows Server 2025, I will be showing this step. Click Next to proceed.

Please specify a local path on your server to store these updates. Currently, I only have one drive. You can follow the steps discussed here to present iSCSI LUN to your server” or specify a File Share Location as you wish.

On the Web Server Roles (IIS), click Next

Also, on the Roles Services Wizard, click Next

Now, hit the “install” button to install WSUS onto your server.

You can safely close the wizard or wait for it to finish the installation. If you choose to close the wizard, you can monitor the progress also from the Server Manager Overview Notification icon.

Configure Windows Server Updates Services

To perform the “Post-installation task” for WSUS. Click on the Notifications icon in the top-right corner of Server Manager and click on “Post-deployment Configuration” for WSUS.

This will start configuring the required services for WSUS on the server.

You will be prompted to initiate the WSUS configuration. You can disregard this prompt and initiate the task later. We have already covered these steps in a previous post on the setup of WSUS Server on Windows Server 2019, I’ll demonstrate how to execute these steps later or modify the settings.

As you can see the WSUS Post-deployment configuration is complete.

Launch Windows Update Services Console

To do this, open Server Manager and click on Tools and select “Windows Server Update Services”. You can also click on WSUS from the dashboard, right-click on the Server and select “Windows Server Update Services” as shown below.

The updated Service page will open up as shown below. Click on the options “Option” as shown below to configure WSUS.

You will have to configure the Options settings according to your business needs.

Set up WSUS Email Notfication

For example, Let us configure WSUS Email Notification, click on the “Email Notification Link” and this will open the wizard below. Click on the General tab to send new updates when new updates are synced etc.
